European main custody IT solutions benchmark

European main custody IT solutions benchmark

While the Securities services industry is currently going through significant changes (geographical expansion in the retail banking industry, stakeholders concentration in the custody industry, reinforcement of regulatory constraints, harmonisation of settlement processes, growing number of execution venues and clearing infrastructures…), Aurexia has conducted market research in order to benchmark the main Custody IT solutions which are available on the market.

In order to achieve this analysis, we have:

Selected a panel of 8 software editors
Established a peer comparison based on tools as well as corporate criteria
Collected documentation in addition to organising live demos
Shared point of views with those editors as far as their business development strategies were concerned, both in France and throughout Europe.
Paid close attention to the rising needs of our clients
The research focuses on the following functional coverage of a custodian/account keeper

  • Order receipt (RTO)
  • Order routing (via an Order Management System)
  • Clearing
  • Custody / Corporate Actions
  • Portfolio Management
  • Account keeping
  • Data management

This benchmark aims at :

Providing a  better understanding of the Securities processing IT systems European market and their functionalities
Identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each IT solution
Analysing business development strategies as well as implementation strategies of European editors
Assist our clients in their choice of the most adequate solution in accordance to their strategic goals and ambitions.
In order to further harmonize their IT systems or to go global on their activities, some questions arise for banking institutions to remain competitive:

  • Which are the local characteristics in a given country or area?
  • Should a universal banking system be used or specialised modules be implemented locally ?
  • What is their main business activity in each area? Which critical size should be reached on each market?
  • Is it necessary to implement a dedicated Securities processing IT system? If yes, which one?
  • Is it necessary to integrate a complete editor's suite or would the bank rather mix modules, or implement solutions provided by several editors?
  • Would it be more profitable to implement industrial solutions with a single global access in one given geographic area?

In conclusion, there is no such thing as a unique solution which would cover all the needs at once. As a matter of fact, a universal banking system shows some limits, especially when it comes to managing domestic specificities pertaining to account keeping, local regulatory constraints or tax particularities (such as SRD or PEA in France)

Major banking institutions which are well-established on their domestic market are mainly expanding towards 3 regions: Western Europe, Eastern Europe as well as emerging countries. In order to stay competitive, IT solutions providers not only tend to gain a better geographical coverage as well, but also to improve the modularity of their solutions. This should give rise to new business partnerships or ventures in the short-run.

As far as ergonomics aspects are concerned, significant progress was made in terms of user-friendly interfaces thanks to new technologies such as RIA (Rich interface applications).

Generally speaking, editors foresee that tax regulations in Europe will probably follow the harmonisation trend. However, these players still have to stay up-to-date by following banking institutions in the race to globalization and developing strategies to acquire new markets.

As for banks, they will not hesitate to combine the strengths of several IT solution providers in order to meet their functional as well as geographical needs.
